The healthcare system in the Accra Metropolis is primarily managed and coordinated by the Metropolitan Health Directorate, which works in collaboration with various stakeholders and healthcare providers to ensure the delivery of quality healthcare services.
Primary Healthcare Facilities: The Accra Metropolis is home to numerous primary healthcare facilities, including community clinics, health centers, and polyclinics. These facilities play a vital role in providing essential healthcare services, such as general consultations, preventive care, maternal and child health services, immunizations, family planning, and health education to the local population. They serve as the first point of contact for individuals seeking healthcare and play a critical role in disease prevention and health promotion.Hospitals and Specialized Care: The Accra Metropolis is also equipped with several hospitals that offer a wide range of specialized medical services. ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW OF THE METROPOLITAN HEALTH DIRECTORATE
Roles and Responsibilities
The role of the health directorate is to provide direction in the management of all areas of health service delivery in the metropolis and to advice the Metropolitan Assembly on health matters.Our responsibilities as a health directorate include;

• Providing leadership and supervisory role in the execution of all health programmes and activities in the metropolis
• Monitoring the implementation of both clinical and public health interventions including communicable disease control and surveillance, reproductive, adolescent and child health, nutrition and health promotion.
• To ensure the implementation of decisions of the Metropolitan Health Committee
• Plan and organize human and material resources for health service delivery in the metropolis
• Investigate diseases, outbreaks, ensure emergency preparedness from a public health perspective and provide expert advice on health to the Metropolitan Assembly
• Provide quality direction and feedback to the sub-metros on their performance.

Governance Structure and Functions
The Metro Health Directorate (MHD) is an administrative branch of the Metropolitan Assembly through the Metro Chief Executive Officer (Mayor) and reports functionally to the Regional Health Directorate (RHD) through the Regional Director of Health Services.The Metro Director of Health Services is the Head of the MHD. She is advised by the Metro Health Committee (MHC) and supported by the Municipal Health Management Team (MHMT) which consists of technical and administrative staff of various qualifications with the responsibility of coordinating health programs/projects, and technical/administrative units of the MHD.
