Accra covers an area of about 23.44sqkm. Following the creation of seven (7) Municipal Assemblies out of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, the AMA currently is made up of Three (3) Sub-Metropolitan District Councils as follows; Ablekuma South, Okaikoi South, and Ashiedu Keteke.
The Assembly is also made up of three (3) Constituencies with three Members of Parliament.
The population of the AMA in 2020, according to the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) was 290,091. This was made up of 47.2% male and 52.8% female with an annual growth rate of 3.1%. The population of Accra Metropolitan Assembly in 2024 is estimated to be about 305,302, comprising of 49% male and 51% female. About two million people commute to the city on daily basis for a wide range of services as the capital city of Ghana.

Ablekuma south has the largest population (48%), followed by Ashiedu keteke (27%) and Okaikioi south (25%). In addition, females constitute 51% and 49% males of the total population of the Metropolis, a situation which is consistent with most districts of Ghana.
